Sony Vaio Refuses to burn DVDs

My bright new shiney Vaio appears to have a problem
Before I take it back to PCWorld I thought I'd ask advice here.
I attempted to burn a data DVD consisting of Several AVIs. Initially 4.4GB worth on a DVD-R. Then just 3.3GB. Each time it failed without a sensible message - just that it failed. This is using Roxio Creator LJ 10.
I then downloaded ImgBurn and tried with that and still it failed.
It is a BD Rom but caters for DVD+-R discs so that shouldn't be a problem. Has anyone else had a similar issue with a Vaio and resolved it?

Have you tried burning standard data files. I just wonder if something is trying to be clever and blocking an AVI file burn on a data disk

Have you tried different blank media?  It may be the media isn't fully compatable with the drive or there may be a firmware update for the drive available on the sony web site

I'm going to have to leave it for a fe days as I'm getting ready for my trip to Belfast.
Really looking forward to the drive up to Birkenhead in this weather
Hopefully the motorways will be clear.
I'll report back on the burning issue when I return next week.
