My photos are jpegs and around 5MB each.
If I was to put them on the web, for say Gumtree, or eBay or Recycle, I understand I can make them smaller, with minimal effect on the viewing quality.
Is there a simple and free way to do this and can it be done in a batch?

@Leapy @Anonymous The BEST image resizer is FASTIMAGERESIZER its free...
http://adionsoft.net/fastimageresize/
Will reduce a 5mb pic to about 800 kb without loss of detail or colouring... and...you can use the options to have the pic put in a separate SUB FOLDER in the original folder... so ... you still have the orginal size in it`s original location, and you have the resized ( smaller file version ) in the sub folder of the orginal location...
AND... you don`t have to "open it".... just drag and drop the pics onto the desktop icon, and within a few seconds, they will be re-filed, and renumbered.... e.g... 001 880x400.jpg so they are easily identified.
MAGIC ! ..

I have been using Image Resizer for Windows and it works very well using the right click menu in windows.
It will do batches and you can keep the originals or delete them if you wish.
You can get it here: http://www.bricelam.net/ImageResizer/

For ebay and the like I prefer photoshop cs so I can cut and resize at the same time as well as making any necessary contrast/brightness adjustments.
Early versions can be downloaded for free.

@billnotben As @Anonymous says.... Irfanview.... much simpler program... and you don`t have to "load" each image from the same folder... once you have done the necessary quick crop and saved it.. you move on to the next on in the same folder... Irfanview, is the second most magic prog going.. !.. for quick viewing and editing a days pics ( or even a month`s, if you are that busy ! ! )...

Perceivable loss, maybe?
I use IrfanView as I like the ease of use and the control I can have over the results. I haven't used FastImageResizer so perhaps that offers similar control?

Linux command line. Install free and opensource imagemagick then...
convert '*.jpg[200x]' resized%03d.png
That'll resize all jpg images in a folder to 200px width and save them as png. If you want large images, just adjust the size argument.
Converseen is a cross platform application (Linux / BSD and Windows) that uses imagemagick on the backend for batch conversion.
Since it's using imagemagick, its using software that is still updated. One of the applications listed in this thread was last updated in 2009.
