I've always found the screenshot dialog in gimp to be perfectly adequate.
If you can put up with using gnome 3 for long enough, gnome shell can record video screenshots.

All I have ever used is the "take screenshot" util under the accessories menu, just type screen in to the search box. Does what I need never needed video mind you.
