Cars have replaceable batteries.

pedant.
but they also have a lot of non-user replaceable items these days was my point.

please name one where failure of the part means that the car no longer functions properly and the only option is to scrap it

There's laptops, there's tablets and there's cross over products , the latter probably are inferior to the two originals.  Roll_eyes

Re: Should a laptop have a replaceable battery and be upgradeable

the sub frame  Wink
seriously though every part of a car is user replaceable it all depends on the skills and equipment of the user I know some who couldn't put air in the tyres or top up the oil/screen wash /coolant and others that can do everything starting with stripping the entire vehicle down to the frame and rebuilding it piece by piece, that's down largely to user knowledge and access /motivation to use the relevant equipment, me I could do most of it on my car (one with a computer control unit) including rebuild the control unit circuits from diagrams but to be honest when the garage was open it was just easier to drop it there for repairs, however I did  use an etch tank to recreate  the circuit board and soldered on the various bits n bobs one weekend because I had no other option when the original broke due to a heat problem ..... it worked fine for a few months until I sold the car and the buyer didn't suffer any problems for the few years he had it afterwards either
computers are a different beast though, no matter how skilled you are the genuine spares you need are unavailable except when going to the vendor service centre, that removes competitiveness and can only ever be bad for the consumers
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you

seriously? battery fails in the laptop it doesn't mean you have to throw it away.
but I was making the point an average driver couldn't change a chip in the ECU and needed a specialist to do it.

Cars have replaceable batteries.

Electrically powered cars don't have user replaceable batteries!  Tongue

But they are designed to be and are replaceable - at present you can't buy the parts but that may come in the future - labour time for a Nissan Leaf is about 3 hours

If the battery is user replaceable. Thats the point of this topic though, if the battery were not user replaceable you would throw it away wouldn't you...

I think, in this case, you'd take it to an Apple Store for repair.
If the battery failed in your Nissan Leaf you'd surely get it to a dealer for repair and not a scrapyard.

It all depends on the cost.
Which is why otherwise perfectly good devices get thrown away.

Re: Should a laptop have a replaceable battery and be upgradeable

I have an old Compaq ipaq 3950 PDA, bought it off ebay some years back for practically nowt (bad battery, worked on a dock/charger, died as soon as it was unplugged), my previous PDA (also a Compaq ipaq, older 3850 model) had a broken screen but a newish battery that I had previously fitted, spun screwdrivers a few times and made the transplant, PDA worked, dug it out again this week as I had an idea for a use for it, plugged in, charged up, still works fine... Cool
The people who throw out battery operated devices because they claim it's too expensive are usually excuse-makers and just too lazy to try and sort it out, people like myself on the other hand like to buy these lemons and make sweet lemonade with them, so if you have a device with a duff battery and don't feel like fixing it, ebay it, let someone else benefit from that lack of botheredness...  Cool

Funny you say that though because sometimes scrap vehicles have very good batteries in them.
I once found one advertised in someones front window on a post card. The old boy had scrapped his camper van a month after buying a new 075 battery for it from halfords. 3 year warranty and he wanted £10 for it.
Needless to say i took it! £10, 3 year warranty.. who wouldn't?
Worked a charm for years that did..
