Have just done a Norton free security scan and on one section get the message some areas were vulnerable as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.00 was not up to date.
I Never use Microsoft internet explorer as Firefox serves my needs so is there any way I can either switch off or block explorer so it's not vulnerable to threats ?

It isn't vulnerable if you never use it
If you never use it why not upgrade to IE8 and don't use that

M$ have a nasty habit of using IE to display web pages.
If it isn't there, it can't do that.

Only problem - given that the OP is using XP at the latest Internet Explorer is totally non removable.
I am not sure it is in anything earlier than Windows 7 either (it is reputed to be removable in Windows 7 but I haven't seen evidence of it).
