Wonder whether it's the same cable used underground or whether it needs it needs strengthen with additional metal cores?

Its interesting to guess at how they plan to do it.
At the minute you traditionally run a separate catenary wire then attach the fibre 'cable' to that - one of the challenges of fibre optic being that whilst it is very robust, the one thing it does not like is being bent about too tight a radius.
I suppose it could be possible to use similar fixings as now for overhead cables, but care needs to be taken to not flex the cores too much.
The fibre cables we buy currently need to be supported, so would not be suitable for an efficient roll out - presumably Virgin do buy ones with strengthened cores.

i'd hate to see the cost at replacing the cable if someone drives into a telegraph pole and breaks the fibre... Anyone fancy starting a fibre splicing company in woolhampton Wink ?
