Watt is the best way to setup a eMail Server?
1) Is it best run Windos NT?
2) or run Windos 2000?
3) or run Linux?
I am hoping that the University of Teesside will setup the Servers for me. But if thai can not do it, any help is welcome.

It depends why you are setting one up and how much money you have.
If its for just you than a free server which will run on xp may do try
http://www.emailman.com/win/servers.html
If you are going to have lots of mail and users then for free you can use Linux all the way up to Exchange for windows which will set you back a fortune as you need the server to run i ton as well

Hi samuria
I am wanting to set one up because I have a number of web sites that I own or manage for a number of non profit organizacions. So that I can manage my eMails and there eMails as well.
I have a budget of £0.00 but I am willing to spend up to £30.00 for the software.
I have a compaq proliant 800 server for this job!
[Edit]
You can see my servers by going to My Computers. Please note the site is still under construction!

Use Linux and use the £30 for a few cans and a takeaway

If the Compaq has no OS then on that budget it has to be Linux.
If you want a nice windows mail server suggestion you could try David Harris' Mercury Mail. Its interface is a bit dated but it's very stable, can handle good volumes and has a good feature set. It comes with antispam plugins and antivirus plugins are readily available for free (mostly based on FProt or ClamAV)

Harris has just changed the licensing so you might just double-check whether your proposed use is entitled to the free licence.
