Running OSX on a PC

I just noticed this report over at El Reg http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/20/macosx_on_a_pc/
and Googling for Kalyway DVD threw up a slew of download sites.
Two questions
- why is El Reg encouraging piracy
- why don't Apple take it down - Microsoft would have stopped it like a shot

Re: Running OSX on a PC

Apple have enough worries with PsyStar i guess!
Also the whole act of installing OS X onto non-apple hardware breaks the EULA - but apple haven't done anything about the slew of sites out there promoting putting onto everything from desktops right down the the EEE netbook.

Re: Running OSX on a PC

I really fail to see why anybody would want to do this (apart from the challenge aspect of it).

Re: Running OSX on a PC

Really?
I'd quite happily do it to avoid paying for apples overpriced hardware.

Agreed Bob
Apple seem to overdo the flashiness a little too much.

Re: Running OSX on a PC

no fair!  more every day.  in fact, linux recognises more hardware than any other operating system simply because so much of it has had to be reverse engineered in order for the open sourcerers to write the drivers.
now that manufacturers have come to and realised how much money they can save by opening the source (no more in-house software team) they are coming aboard in droves.
try pclinuxos.  at present a beta, that's really an alpha, is in testing and is giving excellent results.  there are a few niggles to be dealt with, such as some printers and some webcams, that will be addressed by the next test release, but so far everyone is impressed.

My sentiments exactly. Do I remember reading somewhere in that article that it eventually all worked apart from USB? That's my keyboard shot then! Wink

I s'pose one could always install GNOME / KDE from Fink or MacPorts and pretend to be running native FreeBSD        Cool

Re: Running OSX on a PC

Putting OS X into a PC is rather like putting a Rolls Royce engine in a Lada. yes it proves it can be done but why would you want to otherwise?
