Run multiple desktops at the same time

OMGUbuntu have Mate running on top of Gnome shell
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/02/how-to-run-mate-desktop-in-gnome-shell
Seems like a waste of Mate to me  Cheesy

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

By "MATE Desktop", they mean the MATE panel.

Having a whole other shell can be useful too. Say GNOME Shell were to crash, MATE would still be there giving you easy access to your entire system and apps.

If GNOME shell were to crash, either it gets restarted, or you get the "Oh no something has gone wrong" screen shoved in your face.

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

It refers to the Amazon tie in I believe. Your searches (even desktop ones) get punted out to Amazon. Not something I want/need.

Why did they name it Unity?  Crazy

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

I thought it was because it was uniting desktop, tv, mobile and pad with the same looking interface.  As for precise pangolin I think that came from use of magic mushrooms  Grin

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

I still say it was a miss-spelling it should have been UnUtty!
Still as I haven't use U for 5+ years now I am not worried. Mint is moving away from a U base as well, slowly but surely. As the underlying changes are made it makes it harder to use it as a base.
Take the next move to a new X, how many apps will that kill? Or will there be a compatibility layer for X11 based apps?

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

I must say I've been rather disappointed with the 12.04/12.10/Unity etc. Ubuntu is becoming bloated and being presented with Amazon rubbish when I type in the search bar is shocking.
I've now got into the habit of installing the server edition then installing XFCE4 or similar

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping

The shopping lens can be removed from unity. I'm proper confused with desktops at the minute, I had a look at gnome from the software centre to try and get back a bit more old skool which was ok on one computer but the other looked even more complicated than unity to navigate. When I had a look at mint there was lots of difference of opinion on which direction that was heading as well. I wish I knew the future, I just like to stick to one and modify to my liking.

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

Well for old school you have:-
Xfce
LXde
Mate
New "phone" os's
Unity
Gnome shell
Alternate new school:
Kde
Cinnamon
On the edge
E17
If you want a modern looking one try Cinnamon, you can install it from a deb/ppa. I prefer Mate and it is getting better with each release. Used My Mint & Fedora along with a few other less well known distros.

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

Seems that Canonical is putting its major efforts into things that no one wants (rewrite of X, Unity desktop etc).

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

So out of all these desktop environments does any of the use less resources than the other? I suppose if you have to have something else running to change the desktop then sticking to the original one out of the box should theoretically use the least no?

Re: Run multiple desktops at the same time

Nope a desktop environment can be quite a resource hog.
Something like LXDE uses less raw power/memory than something like Unity/Gnome 3 shell.
Installing several desktop's will use disk space but dependant on which is running will effect your free resources (ram etc). Also the background you have can make your desktop slower as well. Really depends on how high spec your graphics card/driver and ram are.
On my P4 laptop it is better on LXDE than Gnome 2/Mate.
