Remote Desktop to Windows PC from Mac

Just what the subject says really. I've downloaded Microsoft's own client for the mac, selected RDP in the system settings on the Win 8 machine, but nothing. It says it can't connect. So if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate them.

not done it to a win 8 machine, but quite happily does it to server 2003/8 and win 7

Even though I am mostly connecting between Windows machines I have used TeamViewer over the past few years and it works very well.  Free for personal use.  https://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx
I haven't compared it to Microsoft Remote Desktop myself, but http://lifehacker.com/five-best-remote-desktop-tools-1508597379 indicates quite a strong preference for TeamViewer.

WelllI have it working now, by selecting public networks in the firewall settings for RDP! Don't know where that came from but there you go.
