Recycle bin

When I delete an item and select for it to go to the Recycle Bin it doesn't!
The box remains empty; I cannot find the deleted item via Search so assume the box has been by-passed.
The by-pass facility in Recycle Box 'Properties' is unchecked.
Can I cure this fault?
Is my 6 year old computer breaking down?
Help and/or comments appreciated.
Tony.

Re: Recycle bin

You can set the computer to bypass the Recycle Bin and immediately delete items.  Could that have been done and then forgotten?

Re: Recycle bin

Oldjim. Thanks, but I cannot get the 'General' tab you show - no red x to click on.
I get 'Global' and 'Local disc' when I select properties.
Local Disc shows size of drive152GB, space reserved 3.99GB.

Re: Recycle bin

Very similar, except I have two choices only - Global and Local Disc (C).
Maximum size of R/Bin is currently set at 100%.
Local disc - size of drive:152 GB, space reserved: 3.99 GB

Re: Recycle bin

I have no idea why it is set to 100% but I suspect that is the problem.
Reduce the maximum size to 10% and see if that helps. If not follow the instructions here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;136517

Re: Recycle bin

If your computer is six years old then Jim's link (which applies to Windows 98 and Windows NT) is unlikely to be right for you.

Re: Recycle bin

Thanks. I have Windows XP - I'll look for that . But first I shall try Oldjim's suggestion and amend the size to 10%.
I'll be back!

Re: Recycle bin

No success with the amendment. Now for Microsoft Support.

Re: Recycle bin

Oldjim.
Thanks for your suggestions. Microsoft Support give a lot of information re: Recycle, but it dosn't seem relevant to XP. In any case, much of it is over my head!
I have in mind to upgrade my equipment this year; now maybe sooner than later.
Meanwhile,  I'll have to be extra careful when I delete.

Re: Recycle bin

The only other way is a registry edit but even I wouldn't be confident in trying that

Re: Recycle bin

Why not create a folder called "DELETED" or something and when you want to delete something move it to this holding folder.
Alternatively, install a proper OS such as Ubuntu and get your Recycle bin included for free. Smiley

To A Fox
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll settle for the first one; I should be able to cope with that!
Then I'll think about Ubuntu.
I appreciate the responses of other members. Smiley

Re: Recycle bin

Are you deleting items on a mapped network drive?
