Recommended PC suppliers

Afternoon folks,
Busy looking for a new PC (Base system only).  Looked at Dell, PCSpecialist, and Novatech.  But it doesnt matter where I look all companies have a bad Rep on any number of forums.  I appreciate that most people only post when they have a complaint so I am wondering if any of you have had recent dealings with the above.
Regards
Dave

Re: Recommended PC suppliers

Different suppliers can be good for different types of PC.
In my experience I've found the ones below to be quite good and I believe they all offer base units at a reasonable price.
DABS
Aria.co.uk - I've used these a few times for components and never had an issue.

Try Scan who have an excellent reputation and if problems occur this is a very useful last resort http://forums.hexus.net/scan-care-hexus/

You might like a look at www.ginger6.com they seem a pretty good bunch and the prices of their base units look reasonable.

In my experience, many of the companies are ok until something goes wrong, then forget it.  I've had these experiences with Dabs and Gateway in particular.  In both cases, their customer service is aweful.  As long as the goods aren't faulty there won't be a problem, but if they develop a fault, even fairly quickly, then expect problems getting it put right. Re: Recommended PC suppliers

You could try http://powerc.com/gp/pc.main/1 ;
I've used them several times for local organisations and they are OK.  Like all companies dealing in electronics they do have failures, but they have always sorted things out quickly and effectively.
e.g.  Ordered 8 X PC's + LCD screens:  Delivery 4 days (Cheque clearing).  2 of the LCD's failed in first two days - replaced the following day!
Ordered 19" LCD by phone at 15:30, paid with Credit Card - delivered 12:30 following day.

Just looked at Power computing and the prices look very good although RTB warranties are worrying.

Good point, I have had products that have developed faults, and I have to say Overclockers dealt with them promptly. Haven't had problems to resolve with the other suppliers I mentioned.

Re: Recommended PC suppliers

I would always (wherever possible) go for a local company. Ask around your friends or colleagues to see what experience they might have had (word-of-mouth recommendation is better than anything, I find).
Besides which, if they're local, you know where they live!  Wink

Re: Recommended PC suppliers

I have a real preference for Dell hardware - I have a number of machines still running admirably well with build dates of Dec 1999.
Over the years I've tried hardware from many of the big names; IBM, HP, Fujitsu Siemens, Acer, NEC to name a few.
None of them has come close to matching Dell for service, price and reliability.
As with everything, YMMV, but I'd be happy to recommend Dell to anybody.
Its important to shop around though, even with Dell - you never get the best price at the outset - keep talking/asking and you should get what you want.
I should add, I've never bought anything online from Dell - their website is terrible! Phone up and speak to somebody, it works far better. Wink

Re: Recommended PC suppliers

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 which I bought from their online shop..... Ordered it, paid for it with card, and was told delivery would be 10 to 14 days..... it arrived 2 days later..... Was impressed with the customer contact during order process, and delivery, and even had a courtesy call after it had been delivered..... Have had it for 2 years now, and no problem, (except I want to upgrade my ram...... see other post on that)
If you look at the specs very carefully, and know what you want, you can lay it on the line at the order point, and get what you pay for.
Novatech.... Local to me, a friend bought his laptop from them, they make it up to your specs, however be careful, you will probably have to pay extra for the operating system
Which you get in the price with the DELL
Good Luck

Re: Recommended PC suppliers

I have had two Dell desktops, the first, with Windows 98SE, ran for five years without any problems, the one I am using now is 3 years old.
When it was delivered new within 10 days the hard drive developed a fault, even though I had only taken the standard warranty,(return to Dell for repair) I rang Dell and they sent an engineer to my home address two days later, he fitted a new hard drive and re-installed XP etc, leaving off all the usual pre-installed rubbish that I did not want that comes on a new Dell.
Since then no problems, so on my personal experience I would certainly use Dell again.

As would I.  I always use Dell desktops, notebooks and monitors here, unless we're in a real rush for something.
Their Business support is fantastic and the kit very reliable.
