A rar file is a compressed container for other files - like .zip files, but better.
I think you should read this (I haven't got Windows BTW)

a zip file (that was the original generic name) is a compressed file or series of file, put into a much smaller space.

I think that the Microsoft link suggested how to recover the ASD file and incorporate it into the word file

Looks like you have just tried that - or did your use the rar?

The ASD file extension is used for word automatic backup. Out of interest, what happens when you try to open the *.asd file (by going into Microsoft Word, then going to File > Open)? I'm sorry but I'm working a little blind here, I use OpenOffice so haven't had a lot of exposure to Microsoft Office lately.

If the second half is going to be like then first then I wouldn't bother

Try right clicking on the  .asd file  ..... you should get a notice  "open with"..... and then a list of possibilities.
If you have word or notepad listed, try them and see what happens....

try these suggestions:
check file permissions
make sure there's enough memory
open with text recovery
