As I said in messenger to you there are physical differences.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerated_Graphics_Port looks a useful read as it has a section on compatibility and the different voltage keying.

Yes.
There are 3 versions of AGP, each with its own voltage, and 4 or 5 versions of AGP slots and it really depends on which version slot/AGP version the Mobo supports as to whether the 8X card will work.
