Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

Blimey...that took time to spot my deliberate mistake Grin
Ubuntu is 13.04. It's Mint that's 15.
Ok I'll own up to a typo. Sad

Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

I have just decided to install Ubuntu on a laptop which has Vista installed.
What a problem that turned out to be.
You are installing Ubuntu on a computer that already has an OS (Vista). What do you wish to do.
1) Replace Vista
2) Install Ubuntu alongside Vista
3) Exit this installation
Install Ubuntu alongside Vista.
Are you sure? Vista is a poor and insecure OS.
Yes I am aware of that, please continue.
I cannot guarantee the security of your computer with a Microsoft OS in residence.
I accept that, please continue.
Installing Ubuntu...........................................I see Ubuntu is installing to a secondary partition.
Is that a problem?
Yes, Ubuntu must be installed on the primary partition. Move the Vista installation to a secondary partition and install Ubuntu on the primary partition.
No. I'm happy with the current installation procedure.
If you think I'm playing second fiddle to a Microsoft OS you will have to think again.

OK, I have nothing of importance in Vista so I will delete it.

I will be more than happy to delete it for you.

Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

It isn't true that Ubuntu can't install in a secondary (logical) partition.

You can customise it properly.
If you want a menu instead of that mobile phone style side-bar, you can have that.
Mint gives a screen layout a bit like Ubuntu had before they ruined it.  Grin

Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

Looks like it has all the bits in the correct order anyway  Smiley
I've not used Ubuntu before version 12.04 so layout i have no idea on, i think the last time i used linux was in 2007,  SuSe i believe and a bit of redhat for game servers etc. I do like the Debian based stuff though very easy to use. Thanks for the screeny as well. Im looking for something a little less bloated than Ubuntu, maybe Mint is it.

Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

Standard Mint is not really less bloated than Ubuntu.
You could try running XFCE "Xbuntu" which needs a lot less power for over-fancy graphics.

Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

Having said that 13.04 is a lot faster for me than 12.04, strange but true.
I was looking at this option but if it goes wrong i'll more than like need to re-install everthing.
I guess you takes your chances, i've never tried to uninstall linux from a dual boot senario either.

Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

Could we keep this about MINT please. This isn't chit chat  Wink
Bloat is relative, Mint has a lot of the codecs you would need to install separately in other distro's. If you are after a light distro then Mint probably isn't it, but if you want one that will play almost any video/audio file (OOB) then it is. I tend to remove some pre-installed apps, but not many, I cannot stand the new "flashy" menus, I prefer Gnome 2.n look a likes, so I run Mate desktop. Very customisable and you can even use the same applets you had in Gnome.

Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

I like the customability (is that a word?) of the Cinnamon variety.
I use the generic graphics driver though - seems very stable.

Re: Quick query about Linux Mint

I don't like the cinnamon toolbar, there is just too much you can't do with it. And the fact you have to restart cinnamon to get updates to show  Crazy
I have it installed to play with but use Mate as my default desktop, C hasn't really been booted for a while. M15 is waiting for the caja-terminal app to be updated for it, then I will update to M15 Mate.
The Hot Corners really bugged me in the first edition, glad they are switched off now. Why would I want an expo when I was aiming for the menu?
