Question about Openreach ONT

Hi all Smiley

So I recently had Openreach on behalf of Plusnet install new FTTP line/box to house, no issues. Talking to the guy next door today and he also had a new line installed by Openreach and the same contractor as me but he is with Sky.

We both have same package 900meg and get about 935 over wired and he gets 980.

So he has the Zyxel ont and i was given the adtran sdx611.

So my question is why two different boxes and whos is newer and better ?

Re: Question about Openreach ONT

@Stillgame2026 Openreach use both types - at least - and all depends what the installer is given for each connection/what they have on the van.

As both you and he are on the 900 package, unless you have massive families, or more 'connected' kit than a hotel, I wouldn't worry.

some of that difference could be attributable to the PPPoE overhead

Re: Question about Openreach ONT

One more thing just to clear my mind Smiley

Looking at the pole over the road my cable seams to have a sag in it near to the pole not my house where as all the others seam to look much tighter, could a Sagg in my new line cause any damage to the cable ?

Re: Question about Openreach ONT

Not really - there are four other lines connected to our pole, all of varying 'sagginess' and none of us have any issues - unfortunately I would know, as i seem to be the 'go-to' individual if my neighbours have internet issues.

Re: Question about Openreach ONT

I don`t have any issues I just noticed that from the pole side its now starting to sag a little where as the others about 6 all seam to be much tigher coming from the pole.

Just wondered was it something to keep and eye on or is this fine. thanks for the rely`s @jab1 and @MisterW

Re: Question about Openreach ONT

Do remember your 935Mbps is just about as good as it gets via a 1Gbps Ethernet network connection on the ONT or the Router or the Computer.

980 might just be an illusion if it is a speed test in a web browser.

@Stillgame2026

Not directly related to your query but the following was posted today about Zyxel ONT's

Re: Question about Openreach ONT

Thanks Brian Smiley

If Openreach are installing these newer Onts does this mean Plusnet can soon offer 2gb connections then ? And those of you who are on fttp with plusnet do you have a 1gb box installed or the 2.5 just out of intrest.
