So anybody got any recommendations for a quiet cooler for an Athlon x8 procy.
I have had a look on ebay and these look interesting:

I've used one of these http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Fans+%26+Cooling/Air/Arctic+Cooling+Freezer+7+PRO+Rev.2+Qu... in the past on an AM3 based system and it was pretty quiet ( and not too expensive! )

Re: QUIET cooler for am3+?

the problem with those tower fan type units is the fan itself, personally I have a hyper evo212 cooling tower, on 1 pc it runs quite as a mouse on the other it makes a horrendous noise, only difference between them being the fans in use, finding "quiet" fans seems to be a complete nightmare
so next time I have an need to replace mine i'll be going water cooled
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you

Re: QUIET cooler for am3+?

One thing I've noticed is nobody has asked this question I had to ask a customer in the computer shop asking about heatsinks; What are you using the computer for?
If it's just every day browsing, I'd suggest Zalman cooler no. 4 in the list there, if it's youtube video editing or average gaming, Zalman cooler no. 2, and for heavy performance gaming, Zalman no. 1...
I'd also suggest fitting a 120mm low-RPM case fan in the back of system, if it has the space for one, on all levels of cooling, get the heat sucked out the rear to reduce the heat built up inside that usually ends up going through the PSU causing excessive dust buildup and overheating inside the PSU case, the more air that is moved, the less the CPU fan needs to run at top speed... Re: QUIET cooler for am3+?

Just another thought, if you haven't already done so, in the BIOS look for AMD Cool 'n' Quiet and turn it on, that way the CPU fan will slow down at low loads and  only speed up at higher loads... Smiley

Re: QUIET cooler for am3+?

Cool & Quiet is on. It is during gaming that it sounds worse (under Win7). At the mo, (In Linux & web browsing etc) it is quiet as a mouse.
e.g. when playing Borderlands it is running full out.
I have ordered "Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO Rev.2 Quiet CPU Cooler " got a 2nd hand one on ebay.
The case hasn't got room for a 120mm one but I have an 80mm one on order. With the holls it will be middle of next week before I get them.

Re: QUIET cooler for am3+?

Added the 80mm fan to the case. WHAT a difference. No more full out fan, cpu's are running @<35C running Borderlands.
The cpu fan maybe overkill now, but I have ordered it.

Re: QUIET cooler for am3+?

Better to have all the cooling you can get when gaming, CPUs perform better the cooler they are... Smiley

Does anyone have the AMD clips spare for this cooler? (or know where I could get them?)
The seller I got it off only had the Intel clip and couldn't find the AMD ones.
