Problems getting pics from camera to PC

I do this via reader writer and not via a camera link. My camera is a a Fuji 8000fd and mormally I use an SD card. However my previous camera was an Olympus C750, which used XDs. As the Fuji also accepts Xds and my SD cards were full but contents not yet taken off I used two of the Xds over the weekend to cover the emergency.
On inserting card #1 in the reader a message popped up, "Do you want to format this disk", so that i had to load the files via the camera link, but at least I had the pictures.
With card #2 there were lots of files/folders with strange hieroglyphics, squares triangles and suchlike, and file dates like 09/06/2085.
What could be the problem; is it related to the card reader, the cards or the camera?
I prefer not to use the cmaera link as it is wasteful of battery power.
Ideas and suggestions for avoiding same trouble in future will be much appreciated.
No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

Re: Problems getting pics from camera to PC

I always take it straight of the camera with the correct software that came with the camera. I would guess the format of the cameras is slightly different even with the same cards hence the problems. If you just use them in one camera I would guess they would be ok.
Having got everything off I would format them in the camera you are going to use them with

@samuria. How then that only 1 XD card (512) gave trouble, but the 128 did not? Both had had the same treatment/ non-treatment. Both would have been used much earlier in my old Olympus and then left in the bag when it was ditched for the Fuji and SD. Will reformat as you suggest. Smiley
How wasteful of battery power actually is direct camera to PC, I wonder.

It depends upon the type of camera, and the type of batteries.
Many re-charge via the USB port - but it would depend upon the model.

NiMH Fuji S8000fd. I had never hear d of in-camera recharging via the USB port, I use a separate charger for that. Will have to look up my handbook closely as. if it's there it'll be well hidden. In habdbooks useful things often are

Re: Problems getting pics from camera to PC

thats a big manual
Looking at the mains quick charger - 3 hrs for NmMh I wouldnt think it charges thru the USB, but as it takes 400 pics per charge, are you really worried?  I take it you have the rechargeable batteries?

Re: Problems getting pics from camera to PC

Looking at the mains charger, it connects to a seperate socket on the camera - one of the more traditional round plug/sockets.
It doesn't rule out that the device my charge/power via USB, but it makes it seem unlikely.
Also, there is mention that the charger is an excellent addition, to save your camera batteries from 'konking out' whilst trying to transfer images to the PC - if the camera took power via USB, this wouldn't be a concern.
I'd be tempted to get some high capacity rechargeable ones - 2000mAh ones for example (many older rechardgeable ones are only 800mAh, these can really struggle when it comes to providing the current for flash etc on a camera.) (I use some from Maplin in my flashgun with excellent results, I also use them in my compact camera that I tend to carry in my bag alongside my SLR for when its just a quick 'record snap' I want. - Sadly my SLR takes a specialist cell, so I have to pay more cash for them.)

Re: Problems getting pics from camera to PC

If you are going to use rechargeable batteries for a camera, and you don't run down the batteries very quickly, standard rechargeables self discharge over a period.
These new technology ones from Sanyo (Eneloop) don't lose their charge and unlike standard rechargeables actually come 70% charged so you can use them immediately.
