Re: Problems accessing files

Possible solution...
Download the .iso file of Linux Mint 17....... burn it to DVD..... then shut down your pc.... insert the dvd... BOOT UP.. and you should then be working on Linux Mint from the DVD... ( it is not installed on your machine )... you should be able to fathom out how to access your windows folders and files, after a bit of experimenting..
If you manage to access your "denied files"... try to RENAME the file... then save it.... shut down the Linux Mint... remove the DVD.. reboot and see if you can access the renamed files...

Re: Problems accessing files

There's also a program called "unlocker" that will show whether if another process has locked the file and will release it if requested.
Let's be careful out there !

Re: Problems accessing files

But it can be dangerous to mess around with file permissions.  Even though it's your computer and you are the sole admin, not every file is intended to be accessible to you.

Re: Problems accessing files

I quite agree, but these are files in my documents created by myself.
Thanks one and all for the hints and tips, I will follow through ASAP.

Re: Problems accessing files

Then I think there is something more fundamentally wrong; perhaps your hard drive is faulty?

I am sure not, it has been thoroughly tested.

Re: Problems accessing files

Perhaps your computer has/had one of those viruses that encrypts all the user files on your hard drive then blackmails you for the key?

Re: Problems accessing files

So... having all the good advice... how have you dealt with it?  did you download Linux Mint 17 ?  if so ... did it "work for you "  ?  or how about the "unlocker" program  ?

Re: Problems accessing files

Either there is something wrong with Windows or there is something wrong with the files you are trying to access.  If Shutter's suggestion succeeds and you can access your files using a Linux boot disk then it is the former.  If it fails then it is the latter.

Re: Problems accessing files

Thanks folk, strangely it is all working again, but I have move to Libre Office, which I am happy with, I can open the files with that then save them with Libre's programme, than lo and behold they are accessible.
