I had problems when trying to switch from Norton to PlusNet Protect (McAfee). I had removed Norton using their Removal Tool, as recommended, but could not get McAfee to install, even though I followed PlusNet’s instructions.
What worked for me was:
Download a copy of Norton’s Removal Tool (from Norton’s website)
Download a fresh version of PlusNet Protect (from PlusNet website)
Remove Norton using Norton’s Removal Tool (this is more thorough than the Microsoft Add/Remove programme tool)
Restart PC*
Switch on Windows Firewall (Start, Control Panel, Windows Firewall)
Switch on Windows Defender (Start, Control Panel, Windows Defender)
Restart PC*
Carry out an update of the Windows Defender “definitions” as these will, no doubt, be out of date (Start, Control Panel, Windows Defender)
For good measure you might wish to run a scan with Windows Defender after the Definitions update to make sure all is well (Chances are nothing should be discovered if Norton was working OK)
Now go to the downloaded version of PlusNet Protect and double click
Follow the instructions to install
Restart PC*
That’s it
*The PC restarts are precautionary but this is precisely what I did and it worked for me.
