Re: Printers

Do you know how often he scans / prints? I'd avoid an inkjet printer and if the budget would stretch I'd get a multi function laser / scanner, sometimes it can be a false economy if your ink dries up and has to get thrown out due to a lack of use.

Re: Printers

I agree about ink drying up except I have a Canon where the ink is sucked back out of the nozzle and it has never blocked unlike the previous Epson

Re: Printers

That sounds like a good idea, @Oldjim.  Do all canon printers do that or is it a particular range?

Re: Printers

I've got this Brother https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NWE0MGI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1#Ask

It was recommended by Which at the time for economy of operation it's easy and intuitive to operate. I'm not sure if it fits @Oldjim criteria of sucking back the ink but the cartridges are in the body rather than the printhead and come in three size options. And it prints A3.

Re: Printers

@ReedRichards I have no idea mine is an ip4500 and is on its second print head (it comes separately) and that was bought 4 years ago

I don't remember when I bought the printer but around December 2007 ties in with the last orders for Epson Ink before that printer failed

Re: Printers

I have invested in a HP Envy 5540 printer/scanner, not having a working separate scanner (old-age hardware). So far the HP does what it says. It has a special arrangement to print 10x15cm photos as well as as anything A4 or smaller, colour is good as well as black/white. Because it uses black and multi-colour cartridges with nozzles, there is no clogging bother.

Time will tell!!

Re: Printers

I used to have HP Deskjet printers, a few years back.... biggest problem with them was that it had a tricolour cartridge, and a black cartridge... if any of the colours went below a certain level, or ran out,... then you could not print with the black either... so you would be replacing the tricolour cart with two colours with some quantity left.

I had an Epson Stylus SX445W... which was "ok" for b&w printing.. but terrible colour matching to photographs on screen.. despite several different methods of "screen to printer" matching.

Just recently, ( before xmas) I bought a white one of these  ( same price )  ( black one was out of stock)..

It does run on usb wired connection.  and the print quality is very good... also a good scanner too... individual colour carts... and cheaper versions do work in the machine.. so don`t HAVE to by Canon carts.

I got my replacement cartridges from here....    https://www.stinkyinkshop.co.uk/canon/ink-cartridges/canon-pixma-mg6850

Re: Printers

I use http://www.moreinks.co.uk/Index.aspx which are cheaper for my printer but more expensive for the one mentioned

One advantage of them is that you can specify the colours wanted in a multipack which is great when only one or two of the colours run out

Re: Printers

I use a Brother HL-3150CDW laser printer, great for printing maps but rubbish for printing photographs.

For photographs I use a canon ip4500 or canon mp 610 which also has a scanner. Both Canons are very old and printer heads have been changed on both but are likely to be unavailable soon if not already.

Refill all the above printers myself, inkjet and toner.

Hard to know what printer to advise someone to get as various factors come into it, one key factor being cost of running it, how reliable it will be and how long will it last.
