Printer installation help on Ubuntu

Can anyone help to get my printer working on Ubuntu 9.10.
Its a Canon MP140 printer scanner, I have download the linux compatible driver from Canon but if using the command with recommended sudo dpkg -i cnijfilter-common_2.80- x_i386.deb I get the error...
dpkg: error processing cnijfilter-common_2.80- (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing x_i386.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
cnijfilter-common_2.80-
x_i386.deb
Unfortunately this needs to be installed before the printer specific driver so can't get any further. I have also tried just running the deb file with  Gdebi and it fails something to do with dependencies and libcupsys 2 I then run sudo apt-get install -f to remove broken file.
Problem is I can't find libcupsys2 in the synaptics list to install so not sure where to go next.

Re: Printer installation help on Ubuntu

I had a similar issue trying to get a MP190 working  Smiley
Q. Are you running the 32bit version or the 64bit version?
Q. What release 9.10 or 8.04LTS or a different one.
A quick google returns <a href="http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=841282"> this</a> web site

Re: Printer installation help on Ubuntu

Thanks HB  Wink
I'm running 32bit 9.10 I have just downloaded the libcupsys from here http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/all/libcupsys2/download and the two deb fils have now installed.
Tried updating to make sure they are the latest version but when I print from a tiff nothing happens then if I try print test page it says cup operation client operation format not supported, in office just says print error.

Re: Printer installation help on Ubuntu

If you go to the printer applet (Admin/printer control) is it installed there, if not do an add printer and it should install the cups driver and offer a test print.

Re: Printer installation help on Ubuntu

For the scanner I tend to install xsane or you can just use what ever program you want to scan into,

Re: Printer installation help on Ubuntu

Xsane was already installed so I'm giving that a try, just trying to figure how to scan in tiff format for faxing.

Re: Printer installation help on Ubuntu

Just enter .tiff as the extension, or change the drop down for Type from "by extension" to "tiff"

Re: Printer installation help on Ubuntu

Cool also prints out in PDF which is v handy, the inks levels part doesn't work but I re-fill them myself so not that worried.
