Actually, another way (at least in Ubuntu 9.04) is System \ Preferences\ "Startup Applications" to control what starts up after login.  Grin

I was going to install the other version but decided to have a fiddle about first.
After a bit of trial and error I did this:-

System -> Preferences -> Sessions - > Startup Programs ->Add
I put AWN on the Name field and avant-window-navigator on the Command field.
Restarted and AWN started up fine. Thanks for all the ideas
Edit: I am still on 8.10 and the option for Start up Application is not available

That's why I put the version number in - I had a vague recollection that the name & interface to the function had changed (a bit).
