Re: Police Warning ?

Even starting in Safe Mode with Networking may be sufficient to allow you to install, update and run Malwarebytes.  I've never seen scamware of this type that was particularly sophisticated.

Re: Police Warning ?

I fixed this on a mates pc a while back, boot to safe mode and hold down SHIFT to stop the autorun programs.
Look in the startup on the menu and it will be in there, remove it then run some malware cleaners on it.

Re: Police Warning ?

I've seen a couple of these, just did a system boot from an original DVD (or USB stick) then do a  repair. Seem to clear it.

Re: Police Warning ?

I've seen it about 3 times with friends and neighbours and once it caught me out
Its a scam
Somehow it always seema to get past anti virus and anti malware and takes over the whole computer
I got it I hadnt been looking at porn .. honest
In my case I was lucky. I got into safe mode and ran malwarebytes and it worked
If your unlucky it can even prevent using safe mode
I'm curious if anyone knows a good software package that's known to prevent it
Personally I use Zone Alarm and since I've had it I've had no problem
I have no idea if thats due to luck or Zone Alarm beating it

I've never heard of this use of the SHIFT key.  Are you sure you aren't getting confused with Mac OS where you use to SHIFT key to safe boot?

Re: Police Warning ?

No, he's not confused. Holding the shift key down while logging in to Windows stops the autorun programs including things in the Startup folder. It works for definite in Win 7 and XP and I think versions before that.

Re: Police Warning ?

But does the SHIFT key make any difference to Safe Mode?  The whole point of Safe Mode is that you do not run much of the software that starts automatically in normal mode.

Re: Police Warning ?

You are right, using the shift key does work on a normal startup but in safe mode most (if not all) the programs it stops running are not run anyway.
