PlusNet Thompson TG585 v7 unstable

I've had problems with a dropped internet connection using an SMC 7404B BRA UK Wireless ADSL Barricade 4 port modem - bridge which connected to a 16 port switch with various PC desktop machines connected via Ethernet.  When all the computers were off overnight or very occasionally on but not using the internet I would lose the internet connection.  The lan stayed connected, the ADSL line LED stayed steady on.
I could go into the SMC control panel which showed the connection was disconnected,  tell it to connect and would be back on in 10 to 20 seconds, or could pull and replug the ADSL line to reconnect in about 1 minute.  Annoying but bearable. It didn't used to disconnect when I had a computer connected 24/7.
PlusNet teck support did extensive line checks with no faults found and didn't know why I had the disconnection.  They suggested I try a free Thompson TG585 v7 which they supplied.  This connected reasonably straight away and stayed connected for a couple of days, but then disconnected overnight.  This also disconnects the lan and is completely unreachable with http://192.168.1.254. ; To reconnect I have to cycle the power off and on, then the computer network interface has to be reset (repair connection).  This allows allows access to the lan, the http://192.168.1.254 interface and internet after about 4 to 5 minutes of blinking lights.
Most of time I connect with wired lan, sometimes with wireless.  2 wired PC desktops and occasionally a wireless netbook with 2 printers off the lan.  Is the Thompson TG585 v7 really this poor?  How does one stay connected to Broadband?
I'm now thinking I will have to go back to the SMC.  Would really like to get around the overnight disconnect problem.
