Parental controls

Sorry if this should not be posted here but I am pretty desperate to get my network secured before my sons read any more damaging texts on the web.
How do I set up Parental controls on a Windows XP professional PC.
Thanks

Re: Parental controls

Just worked it out, very simple and I'm totally embarrased.
It must be my age...
For anyone who may be as stupid as me and not know how to do it go to:
Tools
Internet Options
Content
Enable.....

Re: Parental controls

Its not stupid, actually it's quite smart. You asked the question, went and thought about it, figured it out and shared the solution. Nice one David

Re: Parental controls

Thanks, I appreciate that.
The funny thing is I heard on LBC today a discussion about protecting your children from the 'evils' of the internet and someone mentioned a piece of software that can do so much more than the options in IExplorer.
Does anyone know of such a software and where it can be downloaded from.

Re: Parental controls

Some antivirus solutions (for example Kaspersky) include parental controls. A free solution (that will also cover all devices on your network- Wii games consoles, iPod touch etc.) is setting OpenDNS in your router and signing up for a free account. This will allow you to select between a number of levels of site control- restricting anything from gambling, to social networking to pornography.
I have written a blog post, abeilt from a SMB perspective, explaining how it works here. Full instructions, including settling custom DNS servers in most routers, are included on their website.

Re: Parental controls

The parental controls that Live Messenger offer are quite good & free, but do take a bit of fiddling with Smiley

Re: Parental controls

Kaspersky parental control is not a complete solution. Set it up for my friend who has grandchildren that use the computer and it does not block inappropriate images when doing a straightforward search on Images in Google.

Re: Parental controls

You can set safe search filtering in Google. Go to preferences on the home page and chose your required settings.

Re: Parental controls

It's not a job you can rely on software to do a 100% job.
Don't allow the PC in the bedroom or other private place - if you monitor what's going on you
will have a better understanding of what's going on.
