POP server lack of encryption

Thunderbird email client setup: -
Plusnet webpage shows that mail.plus.net server does not support encryption: - http://www.plus.net/support/email/setup/thunderbird-setup.shtml
Btinternet and gmail POP servers support "SSL/TLS" Connection Security (Encryption?) with "Normal Password" Authentication Method.
Plusnet can only support "None" Connection Security (No encryption?) with "Password, tramsmitted insecurely" Authentication Method.
I know I can read my emails on the website without downloading them but Thunderbird email client allows me to download all my email from BT, Gmail and Plusnet at the click of a single button without having to visit 3 websites and logging in to each one.
I think this lack of encryption is a concern so does anyone know when Plusnet intend to support POP server mail.plus.net encryption?

11 pages on this forum link so http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,132198.0.html the answer is probably no time soon.

Re: POP server lack of encryption

Thanks for that. After reading all those posts I reckon I will remove my Plusnet account from Thunderbird and just download my BT and Gmail emails regularly. Since POP servers are only for downloading emails to my PC am I right in thinking that checking my emails in their webmail page (not using Plusnet's POP server mail.plus.net) is not affected by the lack of encryption or does the problem extend to logging-on and viewing my emails on their webpage as well?

Re: POP server lack of encryption

The website is protected by using HTTPS, in fact if you try to use HTTP,it will redirect you to the HTTPS web pages at https://webmail.plus.net/
So you are using encryption when you access the Plusnet web mail system using the above URL in your web browser.
It's just the directly access (via POP,IMAP or SMTP) to the mail server that is problematic.

Re: POP server lack of encryption

Thanks for the clarification. I shall definitely remove my Plusnet email account from my Thunderbird email client. I shall not use my Plusnet email at all, even on webmail. I'll just use my BT and Gmail accounts via Thunderbird.
Talking about security I notice that logging into this forum is not secure? I cannot see any https in the URL?
Thanks again

Weird, Madeleyite - I'm permanently logged into the forum, and it is showing as an 'https' connection.

It appears that you can connect here (including the login page) by either http or https.  That's something I'd never noticed before.
