Hi I am copying text from a double column pdf file. I am copying one column at a time. The problem is when I paste on to word the formating remains the same, ie, the text is to one side of the document. How do I format word layout to enable the text to use the full width of the page?

I'd suggest getting rid of the formatting altogether (fonts and everything). One way to do that would be to first paste the text in to a text editor that doesn't support formatting (e.g. Notepad) and then copy paste from there in to Word.
On Word 2010 there is a Paste Special which includes an Unformatted text option - that will do the same thing. I don't know if that is available on earlier versions.

You could create a 2 column / 1 row table in Word and then copy each column of your PDF to the table using the Unformatted text option.

You could get a copy of PDFtotext ( its open source) which will save the copy & paste effort if its a long document.

Libre Office (and probably Open Office) can also load PDF documents directly.
