Choosing the M.2 and the power supply for an office pc to make it as quiet as possible.

We want this pc to last at least 10 years with luck which is what we got out of the old one, but there is one or two things I am unsure on for this board. First is will the memory speed be ok, and second... is the cpu overkill.

I just want get a fast pc that boots quick and will last hopefully.

I can have it built with 3 year warranty for another £100 but the board is a B250M-k which has no usb type c

Ponders the riddles... hmmm

@30FTTC06 - A three year warranty is all well and good but for something that has virtually no moving parts, it's a waste of £100.

We used to need a lot of RAM memory because if you ran out of RAM then the computer would resort to using the hard disk and that was very slow.  But now we have much faster hard drives (like the M2 type), do we still need all that RAM as well?  I suspect not.

I think I was just trying to get a feel of just how fast that pc would be vs my 6th Gen i7 6500U with samsung m.2, mine slugs a little with a VM running @fullscreen with just 8GB Ram, worst case senario I guess - but this sort of gives me an idea of what is likely to happen when it starts getting bogged down a bit with junk if that makes sense, hence the little bit more thought.

Why would you need 16GB of RAM for a home PC?

I find it difficult to use 2GB and my swap space never gets more than about 20MB - ever.

I've never used Aria either but I like the pcpartpicker site as it allows you to play with things. So you can get carried away on picking the parts and then try to pare it back when you realise your wallet isn't that big.

And it checks component compatibility so no picking a motherboard which your choice of CPU isn't suitable for.

That Scan PC is slightly less well spec'ed than your list although it does have a dedicated video card whereas you have chosen to use the builtin video. So it depends on what work this office PC will be doing.

The power supply is slightly shy for that build as well, I would pull the big card out and save it for one of the Lads if I did do that.

The pc will be fine at that spec for what we need, I was just going way over the top to get as many years out of it before  needing to upgrade, at least 10 years if possible which is what the old pc has done thus far.

So It's bootup time more than brunt vs longevity. If we call it a good 10 minutes before you can touch the old pc at present, that will give a good indication of what we was using

Maybe someone can chip in that has a 750 Evo with the same sort of specs for boot times etc, I know this laptop boots in under 10 seconds ready and waiting and I've used about 200GB so far.

I have a 850 evo boot time is excellent , also i have a WD black 1 tb when i was looking around reading its said that the Black is better than the green

also the Corsair PSU 750 HXi is very quiet as fan only runs if temp is increased

@30FTTC06 - This may not help you but for my work I have 4 identical machines each has an Asus H110M-A Motherboard, 8GB of HyperX Fury DDR4, running an Intel i7-6700K 4GHz Processor with Windows 2012 R2 installed on a Type 2240 Transcend 32 GB M.2 SATA III SSD. These machines boot from cold to the login prompt in 5 seconds, and 3 seconds from WoL, and considering the build cost that's very impressive.

I used a small disk as I only needed to install an OS, everything else comes from network shares.
