Which of the numerous archive managers handles rar files? I have ARK which should but gets me an error. There is a Linux rar file from rar labs site but not sure what to do with it.

All the archive managers should handle them if you have the unrar package installed.
$ apt-cache show unrar
[...]
Description: Unarchiver for .rar files (non-free version)
Unrar can extract files from .rar archives. If you want to create .rar
archives, install package rar.
.
This package is auto-buildable
