Opening Word or Excel files

I have a pc with XP Pro and all updates, plus Office 97.
Just lately, when I open an existing Word file, Word asks if I want "to revert to the saved file". I answer "No", and carry on editing the file I had just opened.
If I open an existing Excel file, it says there is already a file of that name open, and that I must either close one or rename it. I just click on OK, and Excel carries on as if nothing is wrong.
Now I know these isn't major problems, but they are becoming irritating, so please would someone tell me how to get rid of these two problems.
Thankyou

Re: Opening Word or Excel files

Thankyou, both of you. The Word problem and the Excel problem have now been eradicated.
OldJim's solutions did the trick. Method 3 in OldJim's first solution solved the Word problem. OldJim's second solution solved the Excel problem.
Once again thanks to both of you.
