No internet access on XP computer- HELP - Fixed but I don't know why

My better half's XP computer won't access the internet
It accesses the network and sees the other computer on it
ipconfig /all doesn't show up any problem
Putting in the IP address doesn't work either

Re: No internet access on XP computer- HELP

I had this once before on an XP machine it was down to the DHCP address it had been given. Try ipconfig /renew see if that fixes it.

Re: No internet access on XP computer- HELP

I had this last year... plus 3-4 virtual machines were affected.
Turned out to be internet explorer - version 6 (default) only uses 64bit encryption - so when trying to visit google (which defaults to https / SSL) IE couldn't handle the encryption / decrupt it and thus claimed it couldn't connect.
Upgraded IE (or installed a mozilla browser) and bingo... internet worked. I only noticed as my partners laptop IE worked but my other machines (inc virtuals) didn't... and hers was version 7 of IE. When I looked at the about tab I noticed the installed encryption was 128 or 256 bits (can't remember which now).
Not sure if that helps as you've not mentioned the browser but if by any chance it is IE 6, ditch it as it can't handle modern SSL.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: No internet access on XP computer- HELP

Is your NIC (Ethernet) not missing from that list? Have you checked device manager.

Re: No internet access on XP computer- HELP

No a loopback IF is used for localhost (127.0.0.1) unless it's the MiniPort which I doubt which is why I was asking. I may well be wrong but until told otherwise I'll remain confused.
