New notebook not connecting to internet

I recently bought a reconditioned Acer notebook. It connects to the internet (or at least connects to my wi-fi) but won't connect to internet explorer or google chrome. The stats say that my internet connection is between good and excellent, but I keep getting the this page cannot be displayed error when I try to go online. (everything works fine on my old laptop)

Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a fix?

@che2000  Welcome to the forum.

If it’s a Windows notebook try the following.

Open a command prompt by entering cmd in the search box on the bottom of the Windows home page.

Right click ipconfig  and select run as administrator 

enter: ipconfig /release [Return]

ipconfig /renew [Return]

See if that fixes it.

Thanks for the advice. All it did was open up some silly Google thing that makes it impossible to do a search 😆 but thank you for trying

Read my post again.

You need to insert cmd in the Windows search box, not your browser:

Tried it, but still the same problem, I'm afraid. The notebook is connecting to the internet alright, and I can get results when I type into google but as soon as i click on the result i get the 'Internet explorer cannot display the webpage' error message.

Hi @che2000 

Are you using Internet Explorer? If Edge is installed try that instead, could be an issue with IE!

Internet explorer is the only browser on it at the moment, sad to say. So I can't even download an alternative. I tried sideloading Firefox but to no avail.

Hi @che2000 

Did you manage to resolve your issue? It should be possible to ftp the firefox install exe file.

For 64bit architecture

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/90.0b9/win64/en-GB/ 

For 32bit  architecture 

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/90.0b9/win32/en-GB/ 

Type above the URL for your hardware type in IE and press enter.

If you haven't already make sure the notebook has all the latest updates installed.

What Windows version are you running?

Cheers. I'll give it a go. But in truth, I ain't hopeful. I sideloaded avast and there are a bunch of nasty things on there. I contacted the seller (on eBay) ho said that she'd had no problem connecting to the internet. It could be that I've just bought an expensive paperweight.

It doesn't sound reconditioned to me!

If you want to keep it and you have the licence numbers for installed software I would start with a total wipe of the HDD and do a clean install.
