New monitor - advice please

I am thinking about changing my monitor 22" 1680 x 1050 to either a 24" 1920 x 1200 or a 27" 1920 x 1080 which are about the same price and I have a question
Would I really notice the reduction in image quality with the 27" as compared to the 24" due to its lower pixel density from about 36" away (note I don't watch films on it)

This might be one of the very few occasions where the likes of PC World could be useful, see if your local store has the same (or similar - same pixel spec) monitors in stock and go along to have a look at them working.
The answer depends a bit on how good your eyes are.

A comparison of 24" and 27" both at 1920 x 1080 would give a good indication

Personally I would go with the 1200 pixel vertical resolution. Not so much for the visual resolution per-se, but for the additional 120 pixels of screen real estate. I find the additional 11% visible on the screen actually makes quite a lot of difference when reading and working on documents and spreadsheets etc.

For playing games the 1080 would be better as they won't be overtaxing the gpu/ cpu and hogging ram for the upscale.
Personally I found 22" was the limit of what I could reasonably use on my desk at home, my work desk where I did cad retouching of images and viso cct designs I had a 36" widescreen and a 17" square job for the different applications to run on.
Take a tape measure with you to the store and check the normal use distance as well, my desk is 30" wide but the distance between me and the screen under normal conditions is about 20"

I am not sure I agree with that as the 27" 16:9 is 0.52" deeper than a 24" `16:10 and for documents it is the physical size available rather than the pixels

As I said in the original post my normal distance is 36", Also size, within reason, wouldn't be a problem but it will now depend on what they look like as recommended by w23

I've got a 24" at home (1920 x 1080)
I wouldn't bother with a 27" unless you have a lot of windows to look at,
If you can find a 27" (2560 x 1440), that would be worthwhile.
But they are ridiculously expensive.

Windows taskbar is 40 pixels, when you resize an office window the status bar & ribbon don't change height and eat another 120 or so vertical pixels. So on your 1080 you have only about 920 pixels for text. On the 1200 its 10490 or about 14% more (i.e in page with mode for a given document width you will have several extra lines visible) .
I have two tablets one is 2160x1440 the other is 1920x1080. In landscape mode the latter feels like I am trying to edit through the letterbox (it also feels too narrow i portrait mode!!)

I think I understand what you are saying but when using Word on a 27" monitor 1920 x 1080 or a 24" 1920 x 1200 I would have the document open in full page mode - I always use print mode - so the number of pixels wouldn't be relevant
It would be different for a spreadsheet
I suspect that the difference is the actual screen size as tablets are so much smaller

Just seen this thread and I would highly recommend the BENQ GW2765 (27" 2560x1400) which can be got for under £300.
Excellent quality and has a swivel mode for reading/editing documents in portrait mode.

Went down to PCWorld this morning and had a play with a couple of Lenovo monitors (24" and 27" 1920 x 1080) which were side by side and although I could see the difference in the text it certainly wasn't obtrusive and I tried various magnifications
I had a look at these forums as they were on line and comparing to my present monitor (22" 1650 x 1080) there is no significant degradation so I am good to go with either an IPS or a PLS 27" monitor
