New Router Advice

I think its now time to retire my trusty Speedtouch 585V6. Its over 5yrs old, and has started to do warm kernal restarts more and more often lately, particularly if I am trying to access it via DMT. It also appears to dislike more than 2 LAN cables plugged in.  If I do, both Ethernet and wireless lights flash in sync, and I lose internet connectivity (not sync or PPP), and also cannot access the routers web page....
I have a relatively longish line (Attn 44dB on ADSl2+), and wondered what router was best.  I have just switched to Value, so whats to TG585 like, also have heard good things about 2wire, and the Netgear DG834s.  What does everyone think?  Not too fussed on cost, to a resonable level. Just require a good quality reliable router..

Re: New Router Advice

Loads of 2700HGVs on eBay, and the occasional HG-B, which is the same minus a USB port and VOIP, but cheaper.

Re: New Router Advice

They can pretty much all be unlocked to work on other ISP's.
Read up about how here http://bt2700hgv.tripod.com/ir1002700HGV.htm

Re: New Router Advice

The 2700HG-Bs that appear for sale in UK usually come with SBC firmware, so are fine for any BT IPStream ISP.
The 2700HGVs don't actually need unlocking, at least certainly not up till late 2008 issue - not sure about later (v6) ones. The first four digits of the serial number indicate the manufacturing date eg 1207 - Dec '07.

As you say, 4Candles, technically the 2700HGV's (BT firmware) don't actually get unlocked. All that is neccessary is to 'bypass' some configuration restrictions that are designed to only allow use on BT realms, and yes, even the v6 firmware can be configured for any ISP...
