Re: Netscape Navigator - RIP

Never tried it myself, I've gone back to IE after mozilla was playing up.
Maybe because Netscape was in bed with AOL I know when I first started with PC's everyone said avoid them at all costs as it took over your machine.

Re: Netscape Navigator - RIP

Used to use Netscape before it got into bed with AOL, with Win 95 I think, was pretty good in those days as well, much better and more reliable than IE. Still got one of their coffee mugs around somewhere.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Netscape Navigator - RIP

I used Netscape years ago too. It was in the days of IE v4.
When IE5 came out, Netscape was waaaaaay faster than the sluggish IE5. IE6 got worse still as clicking the back button seemed to introduce an annoying habit of the browser refreshing instead of simply going back to it's own cached version.
Netscape was a superior browser and the last version i tried a few months ago put it in competition with firefox but it just didn't really appeal to me as much as it used to.
Firefox is far from appealing with its memory eating bug. I've frequently found it chewing its way through 400MB of ram so I gave up on the mozilla based browsers and went back to IE which despite its faults doesn't try to hang my system randomly (it just crashes instead but leaves my OS running).

Re: Netscape Navigator - RIP

I've never seen FireFox using a lot of memory - certainly not enough for it to crash. I suppose if you had loaded a lot of badly written FireFox extensions it would be possible.
How much memory does IE use - M$ are renowned for their resource-hungry software.

Re: Netscape Navigator - RIP

I did try FF a while ago after being persuaded by folks on the PN Portal forums, I also experienced the memory eating problems.
I'll stick to IE7 for the time being, at least the holes let the memory leak out of the bottom so other progams can use it.  Shocked

Re: Netscape Navigator - RIP

@Axis you are probably lucky. I was using v1 when it used to eat my ram up. I've not tried the latest versions as I simply don't trust it.
If they didn't fix the bug back then then I have doubts about them fixing it now. It was/is a random bug though which seemed to rear its ugly head if firefox had been running for several hours. IF your one of those users who uses a window, closes it and opens a new one regularly you probably won't be affected.
@Midnight Caller: Where can I get Netscape 4.7 from now? - That was the one I used many years ago and it was marvellous.

Re: Netscape Navigator - RIP

I've had at least 4 tabs open for a week or so and FF is still using less than 100Mb, that's on XP SP2. Seems like the bug was fixed to me. Though the one on my work laptop does tend to crash daily (having said that it's merely an inconvenience due to being able to resume a session, and by resume, if I had a text box half full it will put the same text back in the box and let me pick up where I left off). Never have that problem at home though.

e-mail isn't really suitable for sending files.

Thats true, but Yahoo don't have a inbox limit anymore so it won't matter at my end Wink
