Netgear DG834PN PPPoA now using a DG2000

Well it looks like my DG834PN is on its way out and keeps dropping the PPPoA connection, so it's time to replace.
So i'm looking for a good wireless router, possibly a N Spec due to my x-box being in a bit of a dead spot, but i have a very long line and the DG834PN has done a stella job of holding a 1.5mb connection.
I have 2 router in mind
NETGEAR DGN2000 Wireless router  and the Linksys by Cisco WGKUSB160N Wireless-N ADSL2+ Modem Router.
Or are there better options ?
Thanks in Advance Hudson

Re: Netgear DG834PN PPPoA

The DG834PN doesn't have as good a reputation as other Netgears. Good for long lines are the later DG834s and 2Wire 2700HGV (only available new from BT to BT customers, but plenty on eBay). I have a >63dB line, and changed from an older DG834 to a 2700HGV and it made the difference between the connection being useable or not.

To be fair the the DG834PN, it has held a really good connection for me for the last year and a bit. Thats why i was thinking the new N wireless Netgears might be a good bet.

Re: Netgear DG834PN PPPoA

@Hudson,
Though I haven't had one of these amongst the many routers I've tried, from reading reports/reviews/forums, I gather that the DGN2000 has a good reputation; it is equipped with a Broadcom chipset (so I've read) so has a good pedigree - I'd certainly like to give one a try-out.
What is your line's actual attenuation (the 2700HGV will report figures above 63.5db) - mine is 68.5 'ish and I'm now often able to get 2016 (and a 1750 profile) using a Billion 7300, and find that the Netgear DG834G V4 and DG834GT do very well indeed, and so does the 2700HGV (but isn't SNRM-tweakable), and none of these are 'N'. Some Billions (5200/7300) also do do well, but need a bit of attention to ensure they don't run too fast for the line to sustain over day/night.
Beware of the BT Home Hub 2.0 N router - I found it amongst the worst performers of all I tried in terms of achievable sync rate.

I have just replaced my PN and must said that it was the worst router I have ever owned!
I liked the 2700HGV worked really well for me.
There is also a new netgear one out if you liked the look of the pn http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=7575

Re: Netgear DG834PN PPPoA

Hi Jack, my current line stats are
ADSL Link  Downstream  Upstream
Connection Speed 1344 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 12.4 db 14.0 db

My downstream link is running low at the moment due to my router playing up  and normaly connects at around 1900 with a 9db noise level.
Interleaving is currently at 8 downstream and 4 upstream.

Re: Netgear DG834PN PPPoA

@Hudson,
Your line sounds similar to mine (a borrowed 2700HGV would be specific re the attenuation, as it sounds over 63.5 - which is the highest figure most routers report to).....mine being 68.5db.
If your target SNRM (the figure reported immediately at startup/connect) is 9 or 12, then I'd recommend a Netgear DG834G V4, DG834GT,  with DGTeam firmware added (which can both be easily tweaked to produce an SNRM  down to 6, if wishing to achieve fastest sync as soon as possible).  If your target SNRM were to be 15, however, and likely to remain so, then I'd recommend a Billion 7300 or 5200 which will both force the SNRM down to 6.
If you really need N, then I'd consider the DGN2000.

Re: Netgear DG834PN PPPoA

@Jack
Cheers for the reply,  due to being inpatient and right next to comet i end up buying the DGN2000.
I really want a line without interleaving, but i  have interleaving, so the lowest amount possible which is level 4is better, so not really looking to tweak the line to gain speed. The last time i tweaked my dg834pn to get around 2mb interleaving was at level 16 and was getting alot of errors and xbox live was un usable.
Anyway in typical me and electrical item fashion, my ethernet port on my laptop his died and i cannot even setup my new router !!!

Thanks for your help.

Re: Netgear DG834PN PPPoA now using a DG2000

Well after 24hrs of use, things are looking good netgear DG2000.
It has held a rock solid line with around +/-0.2 db swing on the line noise only dropping to 9.7db when i get a phone call.
Current Line stats are

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1536 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 9.9 db 14.0 db

Router stats works with this as well.

Hudson YOU HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM  your phone should not in any way affect your broadband.  if you have any other filters handy, try them out
do you have any noise on a qiet line test with your phone?

Re: Netgear DG834PN PPPoA now using a DG2000

Hi Pierre Pierre
Thanks for the reply, yeah i'm sure i have a problem with my line and over the last 2 years + i have had a load of engineers visits,faceplates,filters and modems (large cost to me). BT's answer to the problem is the standard reply.
You have a very long line and this is the best performance you can expect. So basically, i end up with a load of interleaving (normal around level 16) to resolve the problem and get fobbed off by BT and to a degree Plusnet.
I will be looking to switch to a cheaper isp cause tbh paying the money i do for the quality of line i get is a joke but what can you do ?
