Netgear DG834G configuration

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but here goes.  I upgraded to Plusnet Premium on 2/12/09 which estimated (during the change process) I would get 10Mb/s.  The first thing that happened was my profile dropped from about 6500 down to 2000.  Plusnet have now changed this and I now measure speeds of about 5Mb/s or just over.
This is about the same as the speeds I was getting on my previous 'up to 8Mb/s' package.  Does anyone know if I would need to reconfigure my router (Netgear DG834G V2) to obtain the estimate speeds of 10Mb/s or somewhere near that?  The Netgear website hasn't been much help.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Netgear DG834G configuration

Estimates are just that, estimates and is not a guarantee of the speed you will get.
You don't have to do anything on the router.. it will sync at the highest speed you line will support.
What are your line stats? Your downstream SNR may be set higher than the normal minimum level of 6dB which will affect the sync rate you will get.

Re: Netgear DG834G configuration

You may want to investigate the capabilities of the DMT program if you have a reasonably stable line.
You may be able to reduce your noise margin.

Re: Netgear DG834G configuration

Thanks for the replies.  Here are some stats:
Port        Status          TxPkts    RxPkts      Collisions  Tx B/s  Rx B/s  Up Time
WAN PPPoA         1474190  1375042 0                 1133 2165 73:38:59
LAN 10M/100M 676801   784920 0                 794 581 73:39:16
WLAN 11M/54M 821813   884636 0                 1526 752 73:39:05
ADSL Link                 Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7008 kbps         448 kbps
Line Attenuation         41 db                 13.5 db
Noise Margin         7 db                 22 db
I am not all that savvy about SNR but I assume that it is the same thing as 'Noise Margin'.  It varies between 3 and 7 db.  Are these figures normal?
Also I believe my line is quite stable.  What is this DMT program and where do I acquire it?  Googling it didn't really reveal much.
Thanks.

Re: Netgear DG834G configuration

There is nothing wrong with your default noise margin so I wouldn't fiddle with it.
