NGA Amplifiers (NGA‐A)

Hi

Is anybody on one of these?

Is it pole or in the below ground connection box?

Any issues?

Thanks

Re: NGA Amplifiers (NGA‐A)

I wasn't even aware of the existence of any such thing.

Re: NGA Amplifiers (NGA‐A)

How would we know whether we were 'on' one, whatever it is?

Re: NGA Amplifiers (NGA‐A)

@ejs

I found them in a BT document circa 2013, the NGA is a vdsl amplifier which boosts the signal on the 'D' side, the other post refers to basically a small dslam.

I am on a sub superfast line according to my county council (BDUK) , 22Mbs (they state Superfast Broadband is defined by UK Government as download speeds in excess of 24Mbps).

While the line is rated at 26Mbs, by BT's monthly tests its 22MBs, so I am trying to see of me and my neighbours can get a better service, and no we are not in the middle of the countryside, we are in a town.

@Baldric

A small aluminium box up the pole, or possibly in a street underground junction box, you may have seen one when OR are about.

Re: NGA Amplifiers (NGA‐A)

Can you give any more details about this BT document? I've got quite a collection of BT documents, covering that era, and I don't remember any such thing.

@ejs

Search Google

"BDUK Solution Evolution"

There are two hits, the second one has the information re the NGA and FTRRN, the first one is also interesting.

Re: NGA Amplifiers (NGA‐A)

Both of those documents merely indicate these amplifiers / regenerators are options that BT have investigated.

The ISP Forum slides from 3 Feb 2015 lists "Amplifiers: Q3 15/16". The next ISP Forum slides, 29 Apr 2015 lists "Regenerators (BBRA): on hold", I don't think there is any later mention of them.

Considering that the focus has now shifted to rolling out FTTP, I don't expect many changes to happen regarding FTTC. A few infill cabinets and associated copper rearrangement perhaps.

Re: NGA Amplifiers (NGA‐A)

@ejs

Searching google for "Regenerators (BBRA)" refers to adsl.

This post and the associated  Fibre to the Remote Node (FTTRN) post are only referencing VDSL.

NGA Amplifiers (NGAA)

What is NGAA?

Electronic amplifier inserted between an FTTC cabinet and premises

Boosts VDSL signal to extend Dside reach (copper cable) and speed performance of FTTC

expected 24 Mbps within 2.5km of cabinetWhy is it attractive?

Delivers standard FTTC service over longer Dside lines
Electrical power provided from cabinet over customer’s copper line
