ext3 file systems will format very quickly - several minutes typically.
What method are you using to transfer that data?
If it's the usual Windows "sharing" it will be slow - but not that slow!
You have a Linux filesystem there - and it's very fast
If your NAS has a NFS server built-in (they often have) - then you can use programs like rsync etc.

Yes it has a server built-in, do you have a link to "rsync"? Is it Free? and will it work on Windows XP home?

I found one site http://optics.ph.unimelb.edu.au/help/rsync/rsync_pc1.html which is easy to read - but horrendously dated.
(Don't use their software).
However, ext3 has been around for donkey's years.
I've got a cheapo "NAS" which consists of a circuit board sitting on top of a single 750MB SATA drive (forming a semi-enclosure).
[It's got ethernet, TCP, NFS, SAMBA and a web server and etc all on this one card]
So my setup is pretty much the same - except it's primitive - (Wireless to the router, with the NAS disk wired into the router).
When sending large files I get sustained rates of about 4MBytes/second.
I hope you didn't try to format those disks of wireless!
But the initial load of your backup will be slow - perhaps cable would be good?
