My website has been archived

I’ve beeb with free-online for many years. Now Plusnet is archiving my family’s website- suddenly I’m told it’s too large although there is little change in content.
I use WYSIWYG Web Builder and sizes of files is not shown.
Can somebody please help me out of this distressing situation?

Re: My website has been archived

I've restored your site Terry.

What I suspect you haven't realised is that your webspace has, not only a physical storage limit, but also a 250Mb/day bandwidth limit - https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/about-your-plusnet-webspace/#do-i-get-webspace

This means for example, that if 5 people were to visit your website in a day and download a 50MB file each (or view 50MB of page content in a web browser), then it would take you over your allowance and the site would be archived.

Re: My website has been archived

@terrybraverman

I would consider getting hosting elsewhere.

A 250Mb transfer limit is nothing nowaways and I don't see the reason why PlusNet still enforce it.

A cynicial me would say it is because they don't support web hosting anymore, so it is not in their interest to increase the limit or even axe it complely as it will encourage people to look elsewhere if they keep it in place.

Ok you will need to pay, but it doesn't cost much and there is no point in your site going down again and again if it gets popular.

Also it has the reverse effect - people won't visit your site as they'll think "Well I can't be bothered to look at it, it never works".

Re: My website has been archived

Thanks again Bob.
I cannot understand why, for the best part of 20 years, there has been no problem and now there is. I doubt I have more than a few ‘visitors’ a year. Why have matters changed? I’m not doing things differently - just updates occasionally.
So ... with limited knowledge how to I prevent this sudden archiving?
I appreciate your time and effort.

Re: My website has been archived

Have you uploaded any more photos?

Hard to say. but for all you know a friend of yours may have mentioned the site without you knowing.

Other possibiity, and I must admit I know nothing about them is your site may have been hotlinked (I think it's called). Your site, unless it has a login page may have been picked up by a search engine, such as Google of course.

It's not just that they don't support it, it's now costing them money as they outsourced it to an external company.

Not true. The Homepages platform is entirely our own.

Re: My website has been archived

Thanks again.
I’d like to stay with Plusnet.
I just need to know what it is that’s suddenly taken me over a limit.
Is it photos perhaps?
Are the files from my previous website still on the system and not being overridden?
I’m too old to think of moving the website elsewhere - it was difficult enough for me to get this far as it is!

Re: My website has been archived

I can probably activate some webstats on your account to help answer that question. Remind me tomorrow and I'll do my best.

Fair enough @terrybraverman

I can understand your point.

Hopefully Bob can get some stats on what files are being accesed the most and are causing the issue.

Re: My website has been archived

That was just the CGI platform migrated. Normal homepages were uneffected by the move.

Re: My website has been archived

Looking at your website, it's going to be the pretty photos that are the issue. If someone goes through all your galleries it's going to take you over. I suggest you look at moving just them elsewhere and then putting links to the galleries on your free-online site.

Re: My website has been archived

Thank you.
I’m not sure how to do that so what I will do is to greatly reduce the number of photos and see if that proves satisfactory.
Everyone’s help is great!
