No point having that much RAM, 32-bit XP home wont be able to use it all. Peaks at 3GB!

Re: My Dreem Computer spec would be!

You'd need 64bit, which in windows XP only comes in Pro see http://www.micomonline.co.uk/products.asp?partno=ZAT-00124

Gary,
Get yourself a 42" LCD 1080P television and put it on your desk. Plug your computer into that and it would be ideal for your website testing Smiley

Re: My Dreem Computer spec would be!

Most monitors are already capable of at least 1280x720 resolution, its pretty common that they go much higher than that already, 1280x1024 is only 56lines short of being 1080p definition, but the general claim is that you'd need a monitor of over 24" before you could see any difference between 720p and 1080p resolutions, so the missing 56lines on a 1280x1024 monitor would probably cause an imperceptible difference in quality.
Might be worth checking for driver updates for your current monitor to see if it goes up to (or higher) than 1280x1024 - it could save you some cash. Wink

Re: My Dreem Computer spec would be!

I assume you are going for the AMD dual or instead of the Intel because of cost.
It might be worth checking out the performance/cost difference for your applications including the costs of the motherboard
One thing to consider is the noise and heat generation. I selected quiet and cool components with a well ventilated case and haven't regretted it.

Re: My Dreem Computer spec would be!

Oldjim yes it is the cost.
James_H & pierre My  Monitor resolution with a 17" TFT monitor is:
1024 x 768 - Normal setting
1280 x 1024 - Yes it can do but the text is to smol for me
1920 x 1200 - Max Size
The monitor is a Viglen TFT Monitor

Re: My Dreem Computer spec would be!

Getting a new 17" monitor will not help you with your problem;
If you have a 17" monitor and you put 1024 lines on it, the text will be a certain size.
If you only put 768 lines on it, the text will appear larger.
If you put more lines on it, the text will appear smaller.
The text displayed is a set number of lines tall, so the only way to have more lines without reducing the apparent size of the text is to have a larger monitor.
Obviously, a larger monitor will cost more though.
If reading the text is a problem for you, its pretty difficult to strike a balance between image quality and text size.
It you have more lines, the images will appear smoother, but the text which is a fixed number of lines will appear smaller.
A larger monitor with the same number of lines effectively is making the size of the line larger, so you get back to an apparent lower quality (greater pixellation, loss of smoothness)
Increasing the number of lines to smooth the picture will result in the text reducing in size again.
You see the problem?
Perhaps a larger monitor, with accessibility tools to increase the test sizes might work, but you are a better expert on this than me.

Re: My Dreem Computer spec would be!

Gary,
Can you make the text bigger?  I do this in Firefox using CTRL and + (the plus sign).

You will need a 64bit processor to go with your 8GB RAM and 64bit Windows....
