Music transfer

I Have a number of LPs and singles which I would like to transfer to CD.I Do not have a turntable and whilst there are a number of machines on the Market that can perform this task my top priority is cost, no way do I want to spent £100 + for something I may only use once.
I Have seen turntables advertised for under £30 with internal speakers, if I just soldered a lead to the speaker wire could I just plug this into the microphone socket of my computer or could this lead to problems ?
If anyone has done this type of thing at minimal cost or has any views on this I would be grateful.

When I did it I used my turntable connected to my amp, then fed the pre-amp out to my soundcard input.
But now there are usb turntables that have usb soundcards built in, so you just plug the usb into your pc and record from the turntable soundcard, available for <£40 from Aldi etc.

Have sent for one, the feedback on Amazon is interesting but those giving it low scores seem to be complaining more about the software than anything else.
At least when it arrives it will give me something to play about with for a few hours.

It will probably come with Audacity (if it doesn't get a copy! FREE BTW)
It can be a bit daunting to use if you haven't used an audio editor before, but just treat it like a text editor for audio 
You can cut silence out from the start of the files, you can even record the whole side and cut to individual tracks. I used to have a piece of (shareware) that did that automatically, several years ago, but haven't used it for many years.
Just remember that using Audacity you have to EXPORT to mp3/wma as it tends to work with raw audio files.

Just been looking at some of the screen shots of Audacity and it does look daunting.
Will have a look on you tube for some examples on how to use it, just out of interest does it make much difference which OS you use when using it ? ie Linux or Windows.

Audacity is excellent and isn't as daunting as it might seem at first.
Don't forget you need to install the (free) Lame mp3 encoder if you want to export as an mp3 file.

Nope it works on either, and since you are using only the usb input you will probably need to install a driver under M$ (Linux usually has drivers for the common usb cards installed by default).
Here is the program I used to use to record Loop recirder
I still have the registration code  Not used it for many years now as I haven't needed to transfer anything.

Thanks for that. I Have been looking at several youtube clips relating to the use of Audacity and it looks like a very good program, amazing it's free.
I Will also  download the  Lame mp3 encoder in case I decide to export as an mp3 file.

This has gone well, the transferred music files were saved as WMA which suits me fine as my car and house audio systems can read that format.
I installed the Lame mp3 encoder but could not see it anywhere in the Audacity menu, not that I need need it as I have several programs which allow me to convert WMA to MP3.

Choose EXPORT then type mp3. (down the bottom above Options)

I hope you chose a large file size for those mp3's.
You can always put distortion in, but you can never remove it.
It's best to store in a lossless format and convert on a temporary basis
for low quality players - such as cars etc.
