Mozilla apps optimised for Mac PowerPC computers

I'm sure there are a few Mac users here but are you still on a PowerPC computer rather than the new Intel ones? If so then you may not know that I provide unofficial optimised builds of Camino, Firefox, Thunderbird and SeaMonkey for G3 (750), G4 (7400), G4 (7450) and G5 (970) processors.
See http://www.rpm-mozilla.org.uk. Hosted by PlusNet of course. Wink
Unfortunately because Mozilla have chosen to drop support for PPC computers in their latest Application versions, I can't provide the very latest ones but there are still security updates for Firefox 3.6.x and Thunderbird 3.1.x. Camino however is still being maintained, so there will be more updates for awhile yet.
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Mozilla apps optimised for Mac PowerPC computers

I have an Internet subscription to MacLife, amongst other mac sites.
Today I spotted this on my feed...
I thought I recognised the name !!!
Quote   "R.P. Mozley is still producing Mozilla apps optimized for PowerPC Macs.
By visiting the website (rpm-mozilla.org.uk), you can download a special version of Camino, Firefox, Thunderbird, or SeaMonkey that is created with PowerPC Macs in mind.
These browsers are specifically tuned to work well with PPC, and are snappier than their fat binary (Intel + PPC combo app) counterparts."

Praise where it's due.....

(I also have an older Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, the next model replacing the G5's, which I actually synched up with my newer Intel Core i5 iMac earlier today, as I do every few months, it's a backup.  Scary co-incidence !!)
My Intel Core 2 Duo model runs 10.6.8, I've been trying to obtain 10.7 to run on it for months now, and despite Apple & Apple Store telling me it was compatible, I finally got a guy who knows, after a 30 minute 0800 phone call to Apple US, that even though my Intel Core 2 Duo was purchased in 2007, it was actually made in 2006, so is not compatible with 10.7
(10.7 was taken off the Apple Store on the day 10.8 was made available, I found out later in that day I could have downloaded 10.7 for use on any of my iMacs !!)
I bought the Intel Core 2 Duo as a refurb, at an amazing discount, from Apple UK. Having owned G3's and used earlier mac models at work.

I love my Camino browser...
I try others, inc Safari & Firefox, but I always come back to Camino.

PS: Nice Camino forum here that I wasn't aware of

I wonder, will the tuned G5 version of Camino 2.1.2. run "better" on my new i5 ?

Re: Mozilla apps optimised for Mac PowerPC computers

Huh? MacLife are a bit late on this one. Security updates have stopped for PPC compatible versions a while back.
Looks like you've mixed up G5 with i5 a couple of times there? First, the last OS compatible with G5's (and all PPC chips) was Leopard, maybe you were thinking of the i5 that time?

The G5 optimised version won't even start up on the i5, so I wouldn't bother trying. The Core2Duo is more closely related to the i5, I suppose you could try that one.
Oh and the forum is the official Camino forum, listed in the help pages on their website. It's where you can contact the developers, when they're not too busy to reply, directly.

Re: Mozilla apps optimised for Mac PowerPC computers

I've amended the post so that G5 now reads Intel Core 2 Duo.
