Thankfully its hot up here tonight so I couldn't sleep, found the answer. My motherboard has 3 pci-e x16 slots, a simple case of putting the card in the second slot and it works fine, it just wont work in the first or third slot. Found that info after trawling some forums and found that it is a feature of the Asus Crosshair formula 2 too 4
All that hassle for the sake of trying a different pci-e slot, lesson learnt for the next pc I build.
