I dragged out my Windows 10 keyboard PC last night, it updated, now it's updated, er, what's so special about this update given that I don't actually use that keyboard PC?

Windows 10 was released around the beginning of August 2015 and there were major version updates in November 2015 ("1511") and July 2016 ("1607"). Now the latest one is designated "1703" which means it is running late, given that this is April. In my experience it's only these major version updates that reset settings to their default state.
No sign of the 1703 update here.

In addition to April's Patch Tuesday update (KB4015217) which was installed on the day, a second roll up update was downloaded on to my W10 laptop yesterday (KB4015438 ) . On checking the update history it failed to install but there was an invitation to be one of the first to receive Creators - which I did not accept. So it seems that I will be on 1607 for a while yet.

Same here! My new computer comes on Tuesday, lenovo M91p i5 2500 3.30Ghz Quad Core + Win 7Pro with a view to eradicate all M$ stuff and replace by Mint. If OK then do the same for this lenovo E535 laptop. Wish me luck?

Moved to 1703 a couple of days ago and on reboot I looked at the screen and thought Oh No!!.
However after clearing away all the clutter of announcements it's back to normal...apart from a new envelope on the task bar which I have found no use for yet.

@colintivy I seem to remember, from somewhere, mention that one person managed to get Microsoft to refund the value of the O.S.. before it was registered. or used... because that person wanted to us Linux exclusively on his machine ...
His argument was, that he could not buy it ( the machine ) with no O.S. on it, and therefore he was being charged a sum of money for Windows, that he did not want.. and because he had not used it, he should be refunded ...

That is an idea! I would expect that M$ would not be very receptive about that. But it might be a good try to see if a further discount can be obtained.
Thanks
Colin

There are PCs on sale without Windows pre-installed. e.g. Dell with Ubuntu.

True enough... however.. if you want a Lenovo and they only have Windows pre-installed... then there is a case for a refund of the O.S. if it is removed..

that would be lenovo you'd be seeking a refund from though, not microsoft.
of course, there is the argument that if lenovo don't sell the product you want then don't buy from lenovo (in this instance the product desired is a laptop without windows).
