Monitoring laptop temperatures

Can anyone recommend a good (free) program for monitoring CPU/HDD temperatures in laptops - particularly for Sony Viao?

Re: Monitoring laptop temperatures

Sony laptops tend to run quite warm, alot warmer than alot of other laptops.
Preventative maintenance.
Strip laptop down, remove all dust from chassis, cpu heatsink and fan.  Check fan operation - does it spin freely?  When removing the heat sink get a rag and a small drop of meths and remove the heat transfer paste from the cpu and the gpu chip.  Re-apply a new even layer of thermal paste.  Check on the sony website for the latest bios update for your particular model - this is crucial, if there is a thermal problem with your system it could be due to incorrect firmware, bios update will cure this.
Make sure you have nothing running in the background on your system except for your anti virus.  You want your cpu to be 0% usage at idle - this keeps the system cool and is not impossible to achieve.

Re: Monitoring laptop temperatures

For Apple mac, I occasionally use temperature-monitor (Free)
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/12381/temperature-monitor
From 4 hours standby (sleep) this morning ... first 12 minutes warming up iMac
(It's great way of checking iMac actually powers down when in sleep mode,  which I had an issue with a while back)
For constant top of screen monitoring, of all sensors, inc temps, I use iStat Menus.
