I always recommend Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials as the are the 2 best AV's atm

I have just replaced MSE with Norton on my laptop and the initial run after installation it found 22 tracking cookies that MSE didn't spot! I had done a full scan earlier that day too.
I've used Norton for years on my desktop and old laptop without so much as a sniff but thought I'd give MSE a try on my new laptop.
Never again!  Sad

Re: McAfee vs Microsoft Security Essentials

It is not the tracking cookies that one needs to be worried about,
It the actual Viruses, Trojans, Rootkits, Malware, Scareware et al that one needs to be worried about

Re: McAfee vs Microsoft Security Essentials

absolutely
which is why I trust reports from http://www.av-comparatives.org/dynamic-tests/ Real World Protection Tests and MSE comes right at the bottom of the pile

I trust actual experience & physical testing on my test rigs, for my proof

Re: McAfee vs Microsoft Security Essentials

Frankly with the limited amount of testing you are able to do I would label that as opinion not proof
When the main professional independent testing organisations disagree with you I would believe them

How do you conclude what my limitations are / are not.
Do you know how many test rigs I use, how I infect the test rigs, how many people are involved, what testing procedures are used et al ?Huh
Do you know the size of my company, how many employees I have on the books ?Huh
Therefore how can you be judge jury executioner ?Huh
Also do you know what my company specialises in ?Huh

I have a fair idea when looking at your website http://www.torfaenpcrepair.com/ which you included in your profile for all to see

Re: McAfee vs Microsoft Security Essentials

What is on there is minimal to say the very least
& it does not say what goes on behind the scenes
Or gives away any trade secrets
Or how we gain, our experience et al

Dead right - no address
No reference in any of the local directories as far as I can see and nothing showing under BT Directory Enquiries
The company only seems to have been running for about 31 months according to Linkedin

Re: McAfee vs Microsoft Security Essentials

Sorry but i disagree with oldjim , All yes All !! comparison websites are somehow paid for ,, they are not built or run for free , so they have to make money .
Where does the money come from Huh if its AV obviously its from AV company's who pay to have their products tested,  so  there  is no completely unbiased view .
you only quote from what they say , not from what you know to be true .
Ok i agree MSE may not be the best there is ,,, But it definitely not the worse .
Norton is Good but defiantly the worse at slowing your system down , i used to use AVG but now i wont touch it , Comodo which you use is really good and was impressed for the year i used it , but dont like the idea of maybe some Russian hacking getting inside my PC.
For a average user there is nothing simpler to use with decent results than MSE , and its free !!
it cant be that bad, as there has been several on this forum who agree with me and use MSE  .
maybe we should have a topic just to see who use what ?  maybe a surprise to your AV  test site
Asus ROG Hero Vii Z97 , Intel i5 4690k ,ROG Asus Strix 1070,
samsung 850evo 250gig , WD black 2 TB . Asus Phoebus sound ,
16 gig Avexir ram 2400 , water cooling Corsair H100i gtx ,
Corsair 750HXI Psu , Phanteks Enthoo pro case .

Re: McAfee vs Microsoft Security Essentials

The one I linked to is indeed paid for by all the vendors who are tested but the tests aren't biassed towards or paid for by a single company
The other one AV-Test http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/windows-7/julaug-2013/ is also independent and not paid for by a single vendor
Concerning Norton I agree it used to be a disaster for slowing things down but the last few versions are reported to be very light
I don't use Comodo I use Kaspersky

Re: McAfee vs Microsoft Security Essentials

F.Y.I
We only list in the local rags, & flyers etc, as our target audience is for local, & surrounding areas.
Therefore you will not find us in BT Directory enquires etc
The length of trading time is not indicative of experience gained & still gaining as you do not know & will never know my Job / Educational history
Anyway
We dont have to justify ourselves to you,
Therefore enough said on the matter
