I think Oldjim is talking about a "valuable" function whereby by M$ assume you nicked their software.
So it wants you to prove that you have paid for your buggy software.
In fact, it wants to repeat this process every 90 days - because M$ assume that you have to be a really muddleheaded idiot to have paid for this software.

Personal insults specially against moderators are good for a ban on these forums and calling me "a really muddleheaded idiot" should qualify  Shocked Shocked Lips_are_sealed
Now how do I ban Microsoft  Roll_eyes

It wasn't a personal insult, since the referent was Microsoft.  Grin Roll_eyes Lips_are_sealed

Thinks - how to get stripped of Moderator status and banned to boot.
Modify the swear filter to change Microsoft into "Only a really muddleheaded idiot would buy this"

Re: May be one to delay the installation of until we see if there are any bugs

Just been reading about it on El-Reg, it will be an "optional" install, a bit like the IE 8 it keeps trying to force on to my VM. Spyware by any-other name? Does that mean that if you don't install it then M$ will assume you have a pirate copy?? (Since it checks for the "bypasses", if you don't have them then it wont matter if you install it, will it??  ;))
I still like the Linux Genuine Advantage site  Cheesy
I know a couple of people who had their fully paid up copies banned "due to unforeseen circumstances" i.e. the M$ server going down!

I've seen two computers where that happened and they both had a particularly nasty virus that had replaced the Windows atapi.sys file with its own version.  I don't think its fair to blame Microsoft for an update that pushes virused computers over the edge.  The problem is that this virus passes undetected by many scanners.  You'll know you've got the virus when you do a search (Google or otherwise), click on a link and get taken to another destination than the web address associated with the link.
You should be able to banish the blue screen by using a Windows disk to boot the computer and replacing atapi.sys with the correct file.

I think that Microsoft should expect viruses to be there.
After all, it's their OS that let them in!
Why do they rely on bolt-on programs to try and block them?
