If I resize column widths in File Explorer, everything's fine until I exit and re-start it ..... the column widths have been re-set to default. Anyone have a fix for this?

Try this it may or may not be what you need and you can experiment as you wish.
Click ‘Start’ then ‘File Explorer’ to open it
Click to select any file list you need to set
Either drag the file columns to the width you require or proceed to the next item
Look at the very top right of the menu bar next to the blue question mark and click the tiny downward pointing arrow to open the menu ribbon.
Click the ‘View’ tab to select it
If you have not dragged the columns to fit above then click ‘Size all columns to fit’
Click the far right ‘Options’ down arrow and select ‘Change Folder and Search Options’
In the new window that opens click the ‘View’ tab to select it
Click ‘Apply to all folders’ and you are done
BTW if like me you are fed up with the way the File Explorer opens to all sorts of stuff you don’t need then on the General tab you can try selecting ‘This PC’ in the drop down box.
I also untick the two boxes in the Privacy box at the bottom of the same screen.
I will leave you to ‘play’ and you can always hit the ‘Reset Folders’ if it all goes wrong, regards, P.

Thanks for the suggestions but I've fiddled around that much that I can't remember exactly what I've done. However, next time I fire up the spare PC I'll have another play about and report back with my findings.

I've had another go at this and, after fiddling around with all manner of settings, I've fixed it but I haven't a clue which twiddle did the trick

A couple of other annoyances:
- Can't pin "Libraries" to the Taskbar
- Windows open in random positions on the Desktop
